Writing as Wonder

On March 10, 2022, Victor Klimoski and Samuel Rahberg hosted a webinar through Faith + Lead at Luther Seminary called Writing as Wonder: Slowing Down, Paying Heed, and Taking Notes.

Wonder is a true marvel. While it can surprise us in the course of everyday life and nab our full attention, it can also be courted, cultivated, and teased into conversation if we pay attention. Teachers throughout the Christian tradition have suggested means for following the Spirit's lead into that wonder and for practicing the kinds of rhythms that put us at the ready. We need these ways to downshift from fragmentation and overstimulation, to give more of our hearts over to the present moment, and to remember what we discover in those encounters. Poems, for example, are testimony to that very process. In this webinar, poets Victor Klimoski and Samuel Rahberg explored stories of wonder – surprising and sought out – linked to do-able reading and writing practices that enable any of us to borrow the power of words to listen.

Samuel Rahberg is a spiritual director and retreat leader and co-founder of Wood & Water Retreats. He is author of Ice Break: A Collection of Poems (Aetos Publications, 2019) and Enduring Ministry: Toward a Lifetime of Christian Leadership (Liturgical Press, 2017). Sam is former Director of the Benedictine Center (St. Paul, MN) and holds a master’s degree in theology from Saint John’s University (Collegeville, MN). Victor Klimoski, Ph.D. is the former Director of Lifelong Learning at Saint John’s School of Theology lifelong teacher. He holds a doctorate in adult education from the University of Minnesota and works extensively as a group facilitator and project consultant. He is also author of a number of poetry collections, most recently Revisited, Gleanings (contributing editor), Margin Notes and Lamentation for the Written Word.
